About Help Ministries Founder and Director
Steve received his formal Bible training while attending New Brunswick Bible Institute (Canada). He studied Pastoral Counseling at Lancaster Bible College (Lancaster PA) and Church Development at Westminster Theological Seminary. In 2000 Steve completed Phase 2 of the Christian Conciliation Practicum with Peacemaker Ministries. The Lord brought Beverly (Runyan) into Steve’s life and they were married in 1968. They raised two children (Michael and Laurie) and served the Lord together for 40 years. After many years of illness and six years of struggling with cancer, the Lord called Bev home on April 5, 2008. As a result of Steve’s church planting experience, he founded and became the Executive Director of Help Ministries, Inc. in 1991. Help Ministries (www.hm.org) provides ministry assistance to independent Bible and Baptist churches and church related ministries. Using a national network of qualified personnel, Help Ministries offers consultation, conciliation services, leadership resources, financial resources, mentoring, missionary aviation services, organizational resources, outreach resources, and personnel and referral services. Throughout the years the Lord has used Steve to help start and establish 14 churches, and to assist hundreds of other churches and many mission agencies. He is involved in mentoring/discipling sessions based on his Biblically Rethinking the Church material, reaching unbelievers using The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus video series, discipling new believers, and establishing another church. He also developed www.CrucialQuestions.org, an outreach to unbelievers, manages a blog www.LastDaysHeadlines.com, to provide awareness of end-time news events as they may relate to the Middle East, and administrators a ministry referral exchange service www.MinistryReferrals.com. Steve maintains the website www.BiblicallyRethinkingTheChurch.com as a ministry to those who are willing to think biblically “outside the box.” It is directed to those who desire to clarify their philosophy of ministry—why you do what you do. Steve is the author of numerous helpful publications that can be found on the Help Ministries website. He has been a member of IFCA International since 1967 and has actively served on several committees, provided various resources for the Fellowship and contributed articles for the VOICE magazine. Steve currently serves on the IFCA Eastern PA Regional Executive Committee, the Conciliation Committee, the Convention Committee, and the Technology Committee. He is also a Regional Representative for the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional. Advancing A Biblical Purpose Our purpose is to fulfill the Great Commission by providing biblical resources with a view to assisting and discipling individuals and ministries to become biblically established, mature, and effective. Advancing A Biblical Philosophy Our core values give us direction and focus. The following philosophical principles govern our ministry: Dependence on the Scripture – We are Bible-Based We believe that the Holy Scriptures are the Word of God and our final authority (2 Peter 1:20-21). We measure both what we teach and what we do by the standard of God’s Word. We take a definite stand on separation. We seek to cooperate with any ministry, movement, or organization which can demonstrate its consistency with the faith in both doctrine and practice. Demonstrating Faith - We Are Faith-Energized We seek to visualize what God wants us to do in a given situation and to act in harmony with that (Hebrews 1:1). Our focus is on God and His ability to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Because this is a faith ministry, we rely on the Lord to provide prayer and financial support through those He burdens to be a part of this ministry. Discipling Servant-Leaders - We Are Discipling-Oriented We seek to selflessly serve others by influencing, equipping, and empowering them to accomplish God’s goals for them and their ministries (Luke 22:25-27; Acts 6:1; Ephesians 4:11-2). Our focus is on helping others to become more effective, rather than doing the work for them. We seek only to advise and assist while providing accountability and guidance. Developing Teamwork - We Are Network-Enhanced In addition, we maintain a network of consultants on various aspects of services (Acts 15:40; 16:2-3; 1 Corinthians 3:8-9). The expertise of these people greatly enhances the work of an individual, church, or ministry. Advancing A Biblical Position We believe in the fundamental, historical, Biblical doctrines of God's Word. The following Statement of Faith is a summary of the major truths we consider vital to our ministry. The only complete statement of faith is contained in the whole of Scripture.
